It’s June, school is letting out all across the country, and that means children are home with encouragement from teachers (and parents) to read, read read! What to do if your child is a reluctant reader? Fortunately, June also brings the release of the newest book in the Treasure Hunters series by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein. In the newest installment, Treasure Seekers: All-American Adventure, adventure seekers Bick, Beck, Tommy and Storm are in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, there’s no mysterious treasure waiting to be found. That is,until the four make a startling discovery centering around the forgery of one of the United States most important documents. Now they’re off to prove their theory is correct before history is changed forever.
Once your reader is hooked on this series, they’ll want to go back and explore the five previous books. Meanwhile, get your hands on these other adventure books for young readers so you’re prepared for the lazy hazy days of summer ahead:
How to Train Your Dragon series, by Cressida Cowell
Before the movie, there were the books, and which are not to be missed. Hiccup may be the son of a Chief, but he’s an unlikely hero. After picking his own dragon from the Dragon Nursery, Hiccup and his fellow warriors-in-training must find a way to tame their wild (and hilariously disobedient) beasts. With character names like Snotface, Dogsbreath, and Duhbrain, young readers will chortle as they move through the fast-paced chapters to a conclusion that proves even the unlikeliest hero may have his moments.
Disaster Strikes series, by Marlene Kennedy
Each book in this series focuses on a different natural disaster: earthquake, blizzard, tornado. In the latest book, Volcano Blast, siblings Noah and Emma are reluctant to journey from the sunny beaches of Hawaii to the cold endlessness of Alaska, even if it’s just temporarily. Their father is studying volcanoes, but there were plenty of volcanoes back home. When a supposedly dormant volcano comes to life unexpectedly, Emma, Noah, and their neighbor Alex suddenly discover that not only is Alaska not boring, this trip is about to become the adventure of their lives.
Mabel Jones series, by Will Mabbitt
Mabel Jones has survived a pirate kidnapping, spent time inside the belly of a whale, and saved her baby sister from the grips of an evil witch. Now she’s trapped in the Noo World, searching for the Doomsday Book so that she can find out what happened to her species before it’s completely wiped into extinction. But she’s not the only one searching for the book, and as Mabel has come to realize, no adventure comes without danger, mishap, and belly laughs (okay, that last one might be more for the reader).
The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters series, by Kara LeReau and Jen Hill
This trilogy follows the unfortunate and undesired adventures of sisters Jaundice and Kale Bland, whose parents disappeared mysteriously years ago. The sisters’ plan to patiently wait for their parents return is interrupted when they are kidnapped by an all female band of pirates. After surviving that adventure, Jaundice and Bland are just happily resettling into their dull lives, when a new adventure arrives on their doorstep, this time whisking them off by train. In the final book of this trilogy, the siblings find themselves once again leaving their Dullsville lives behind, this time for a high-flying adventure that will reunite them with their parents. But those parents aren’t quite the people Jaundice and Kale thought them to be.
Cleopatra in Space series, by Mike Maihack
Ancient Egypt collides with the distant future in this unlikely space odyssey. When young Cleo finds a tablet that sends her hurtling into the future, she discovers she must fulfill a prophecy to battle Xaius Octavian and save the galaxy from his iron-fisted rule. But first she must enroll in Yasiro Academy to learn how to transform from Egyptian royalty to intergalactic space fighter. No big deal, right?
